Come see both bands at Battle of the Bands, Saturday, October 24, at the Normandy Fall Festival.
Sing lead with a real band, a real mic and a real stage. Ages 8 to 18, no experience needed.
Singing with a band is different from singing along in the car. Your child learns to sing over drums and guitars, stay on pitch and in time, use a microphone well, and lead the band on stage.
Every band has a lead vocalist, and many of our players sing while they play. Rehearsals are one evening a week in Normandy, TN, with families coming from Manchester, Tullahoma, Shelbyville, Winchester and McMinnville.
Warming up and breathing to support the voice
Singing on pitch and in time with a full band
Microphone technique: how close, how loud, and how to avoid feedback
Learning lyrics and song structure, then singing from memory
Backing vocals, for players who sing while they play
Stage presence: connecting with the audience and leading the band
What you'll need
Nothing but a water bottle. Microphones and a full sound system are set up at every rehearsal.
My child is shy. Can they still sing?
Yes. We build up to the showcase gradually. Many shy students surprise themselves with how much they enjoy the stage once they're prepared.
Do they need to read music?
No. Singers work from lyric sheets and the recordings.
How much should they practice at home?
About 15 to 30 minutes a day, four or five days a week. Each band has a shared folder with slowed-down tracks, tracks with the vocals removed for sing-along, lyrics and a weekly practice guide.
When a new season opens, families on the list hear before anyone else. Signing up takes about a minute and costs nothing.
